... the Thimphu Tsechu festival

The Thimphu festival or Tsechu held this year Oct 3rd - 5th in Thimphu is one of the grandest of Bhutan's festivals. Featuring dances performed by trained monks in amazing masks and costumes. Tsechus are one the best ways to experience the ancient living culture of Bhutan.
The Tsechu is a Buddhist festival in honour of the Guru Rimpoche , the saint who brought Buddhism to Bhutan. Thimphu tsechu was established by the 4th temporal ruler, Tenzing Rabgye in 1670.

This festival is an opportunity for us to witness the locals in their best and finest Gho's and Kira's in a celebration of their culture and faith.

It is held in the courtyard of Tashicchodzong in Thimphu.

At the entrance to the festival everyone has to go thru a security scan check...no caps, long sleeves & long pants...

Most Tsechus also feature the unfurling of a Thongdrel (or Thangka) - a large tapestry typically depicting a seated Guru Rimpoche surrounded by holy beings, the mere viewing of this is said to cleanse the viewer of sin.. The Thongdrel is raised before dawn and rolled down by morning.
